Carissa Moore is among the handful of young girls who are changing the face of women’s surfing. This May, the 16-year-old will grace the cover of surfer Magazine, a publication that devotes little space to women’s surfing and almost never put a female on the cover. Moore is among three female surfers to have ever made the cover of Surfer, with the last being four-time world champion Lisa Anderson in 1995.
“It feels pretty amazing. I am really stoked and feel very honored,” said Moore, a junior at Punahou School High School in Honolulu. “Right now there are so many girls, especially around my age, that are ripping and that are really pushing the level of women’s surfing. They are mastering flow, power, speed and adding a lot of flare and creativity to what they are doing, which makes it very exciting.”
